Bode George Criticizes Nigeria’s Constitution: ‘Not Working, Military Paperwork’

Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called into question the effectiveness of Nigeria’s constitution, describing it as mere “paperwork for the country’s military.”

George made these remarks during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show on April 15, 2024.

George criticized the current constitution for giving room to politicians to share resources in Abuja, rather than focusing on the needs of local communities.

He argued that the president’s involvement in local governance is minimal, and that politics should be more focused on addressing the needs and concerns of the people at the grassroots level.

In his statement, George called for restructuring Nigeria, emphasizing that it could serve as a solution to secession agitation in the country.

He believes that restructuring would allow for a more decentralized system of governance, empowering local communities to take charge of their own affairs and reducing the dependency on the central government.

The PDP chieftain also pointed out that Nigeria’s current approach to governance has led to a situation where taking up arms and engaging in violence is seen as a means of achieving change, likening it to a modern-day Robin Hood scenario.

He urged for a shift towards a more inclusive and participatory form of politics that addresses the needs and aspirations of all Nigerians.

Bode George’s remarks come at a time when the Nigerian political landscape is undergoing significant changes, with calls for reform and restructuring growing louder.

His call for a more decentralized system of governance is likely to resonate with many Nigerians who feel left out of the decision-making process and yearn for a more equitable distribution of resources and power.
