Bayelsa State Approves Two-Day Weekly Farming for Civil Servants

The government has approved a two-day weekly farming period for civil servants from Grade level 14 and below.

The directive, which reduces the number of workdays to three, was issued in a circular signed by the Bayelsa State Head of Service, Biobelemoye Charles-Onyeama, following Governor Diri’s approval.

According to the circular, the remaining two working days will be dedicated to farming activities, with the new schedule expected to become effective from April 29, 2024.

The initiative will last for six months and aims to boost food production in the state.

Teachers, medical personnel, and other staff on essential services are exempted from the directive, ensuring that critical services continue uninterrupted.

This move by the Bayelsa State government highlights the importance of agriculture in achieving food security and self-sufficiency.

Governor Diri’s approval of the two-day weekly farming period for civil servants underscores the administration’s commitment to enhancing food security in the state.

By encouraging civil servants to engage in farming activities, the government aims to increase local food production and reduce reliance on imports.

The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy, as increased agricultural productivity can create job opportunities, stimulate rural development, and contribute to poverty alleviation.

Additionally, it promotes a healthier lifestyle among civil servants, as they engage in physical activities and consume fresh, locally-produced food.

As the directive comes into effect, it will be essential for the government to monitor its progress and evaluate its impact on food security in Bayelsa State.

The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other states to follow, as Nigeria continues to prioritize food security and agricultural development.
