American School Seeks to Refund $760k in School Fees Paid by Yahaya Bello to EFCC

The American International School of Abuja (AISA) has reached out to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) requesting “authentic banking details” to return the fees paid for the children of the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.
According to a letter addressed to the Lagos zonal commander of the EFCC, the school has acknowledged that the sum of $845,852 was paid in tuition “since the 7th of September 2021 to date”.
AISA stated that $760,910 of the total amount is to be refunded to the state, as educational services already rendered have been deducted.
The school revealed that the advance payment was made by Bello for five of his children, who are in grade levels 2 to 8.
The funds used for the advance payment were allegedly sourced from the Kogi State Government.
The EFCC had previously surrounded Bello’s residence in Abuja, attempting to arrest him for an alleged N80.2 billion fraud.
During the operation, the current Governor of Kogi, Usman Ododo, reportedly arrived at the property and took Bello away.
In a statement by Greg Hughes, AISA confirmed that “Ali Bello contacted the school on Friday 13 August 2021 requesting to pay the family school fees in advance until the students graduate from High School”.
The school has now provided the necessary details to facilitate the refund process.
This development comes amid ongoing investigations by the EFCC into the alleged money laundering activities by the Bello family.
The American school’s cooperation with the EFCC in the refund process highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in the education sector, particularly in cases involving public funds.
