Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, has called upon the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) to take a strong stance in ending the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza.
Speaking at the 148th Session of the IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, Akpabio emphasized the importance of collective action in restoring peace to the region.
Akpabio urged the IPU to adopt resolutions that address the immediate needs of the affected population, such as access to humanitarian aid, restoration of normal life in Gaza, and meetings on a permanent truce.
He stressed that the cessation of hostilities and the release of hostages and prisoners of war should be included in the resolutions to pave the way for further negotiations and the establishment of sustainable peace.
The Nigerian Senator emphasized that the IPU must rise above personal ego and emotional attachments to ensure that the resolutions are all-encompassing and effective in addressing the crisis.
He proposed the formation of a three-man drafting committee to refine the proposed resolutions, ensuring that they are comprehensive and capable of being adopted before the conclusion of the 148th IPU Assembly.
Akpabio’s plea to the IPU highlights the urgency of the situation in Gaza and the need for the international community to take immediate action in providing aid and facilitating negotiations for a lasting peace
It is essential for the IPU to come together and use its collective voice to address this humanitarian crisis and work towards a peaceful resolution.
