5th Orodje Golf Tournament: Attracts golfers across Nigeria to Sapele

The Sapele Athletic Golf Course in Sapele, Delta State, was a hub of excitement as it hosted the fifth edition of the Orodje Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 21, 2024. This annual event, held in honour of His Royal Majesty, Maj-Gen Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd), the monarch of Okpe Kingdom, attracted golfers from across Nigeria who came to compete for the 2024 championship title.

Sponsored primarily by Seplat Energy PLC, the tournament highlighted the unifying power of sports and its positive impact on the local economy. The Orodje of Okpe Kingdom expressed his gratitude to the Sapele Athletic Club and Seplat Energy for their continued collaboration in making the event successful.

“This tournament is attracting a lot of people to Sapele now, with participants coming from clubs in Ikoyi, Ikeja, Port Harcourt, Asaba, and Warri. It’s a competition that is growing from year to year,” the monarch stated. He also emphasized the importance of showcasing the Sapele Athletic Club, the oldest club in the country.

Representatives from Seplat Energy PLC and Life Flour Mill Limited, co-sponsors of the event, underscored the significance of the tournament. Walter Ikemba, General Manager of Engineering for Seplat, highlighted the company’s dedication to supporting the Okpe community. Alexander Verhees, General Manager of Life Flour Mill, praised the event for attracting nearly 150 golfers from various regions and boosting the local economy, with hotels filled with visitors from Abuja, Port Harcourt, Imo, Benin, and Warri.

Participants and guests shared their enthusiasm for the event. The Ovie of Mosogar Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Sunday Odogu Okpurhe, expressed his appreciation and discussed future plans to introduce golf in Mosogar. Chief Godwin Ejinyere commended the organizers for their consistent efforts in hosting the tournament.

Lucky Yakin, the lady captain, expressed her surprise and joy at winning the tournament. Isioma Isune, a leading golfer from Sapele Athletic Club, celebrated her victories and thanked the golf section members and her fellow players for their support.

Chief Dr. Anthony Owumi, the Omamigho of Okpe Kingdom, expressed his gratitude for the successful tournament and called for continuous improvements to the golf course.
