TRACE warns articulated truck drivers against speeding to reduce road crashes

The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), has warned articulated truck drivers to refrain from excessive speeding to reduce road crashes in the state.

Mr Adekunle Ajibade, the Sango-Ota area Commander of TRACE, gave the warning while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Ota, Ogun.

NAN reports that a truck on Tuesday lost control at the Toll-Gate area, due to brake failure, and rammed into two vehicles and two motorcycles, leading to the death of three persons, with two injured.

A similar incident took place on Wednesday claiming the lives of a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger, after riding against traffic around Bible College area of Toll-Gate, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Ajibade expressed concern over the increasing cases of road crashes involving articulated trucks in Sango-Ota and its environs.

He said that the TRACE Corps Executive, Mr Seni Ogunyemi, has given directive that more TRACE personnel should be deployed to Toll-Gate area of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and others accident-prone areas to apprehend erring drivers.

“Such erring drivers would be apprehended and prosecuted according to the law because we can no longer take the lives of the people for granted,” he said.

Ajibade enjoined commercial motorcyclists, tricyclists and articulated truck drivers to desist from excessive speeding and dangerous driving as well as refrain from driving against traffic to prevent avoidable crashes.

He cautioned motorists against drunk driving and taking intoxicating substance that could affect their sense of reasoning while on the wheel.

Ajibade implored truck owners to install speed limit devices in their vehicles to check the rate of speed on the highway.

He further advised commercial motorcyclists to always use their crash helmet to reduce fatality rates when crashes occurs.
