Police in Delta detains a 14-year-old girl allegedly raped

By Ovasa Ogaga,

Police in Sapele, Delta State is currently detaining one Miss Ejiro, a 14 year-old-girl rape victim, who was lured to a hotel and allegedly raped repeatedly and dumped at a private hospital by one Mr Rukevwe Matthew.

ADVOCATE gathered that the victim mother had gone to the Sapele Police Station to report a case of rape against Rukevwe, but rather than arresting him, the police turned around to arrest the victim, Ejiro, a Senior Secondary School 1 student of a private school in Sapele.

According to our source the teenager was allegedly lured to a hotel at the Adegor off Adeniyi road area of the town by Rukevwe on June 17, 2020, where she was alleged to have been repeatedly raped by Rukevwe and was later rushed to a private clinic along Atufe road when he found out, “she was bleeding and reportedly left her there.”

The source added, “Rukevwe took her to the hospital, paid an advance for her treatment and abandoned her there and it was her parents who paid the balance of the hospital bills and reported the case to the Police”

The police invited Rukevwe to the station but after intervention by a powerful politician in the town, “the next thing we knew was that Ejiro was arrested by the police and kept behind bars, rather than the suspect, and as we speak, the girl is still in the cell at the Sapele police station.”

Ejiro’s mother on Friday was said to have stormed the police station, wailing and calling for her daughter release but the Divisional Police Officer, Akande Abubakar was said to have ordered her to be taken away.

Attempt to confirm the incident from the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onowhakpoyeya, was not successful, as her numbers were not reachable.

Meanwhile, ‘One for All’, a human rights group, today, has sworn to storm the Sapele police station on Monday to secure the release of Ejiro.

The chairman of the group, Tivere Akporota, who spoke to one of our correspondents said, “We learnt about the detention of Ejiro, who was raped and detained by the police, and I can assure you that we are storming the station for her release tomorrow,” he said.
