Police arraign man, 32, over alleged assault, theft

The police on Wednesday arraigned a 32-year-old man, Uche George, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged assault and stealing.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and stealing.
The police prosecutor, Insp Caleb Leramo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 4 at about 3:00 pm at Ijigbo Area in Ado-Ekiti.
Leramo alleged that the defendant assaulted one Ajayi Kolawole by “beating him with fist blows all over his body”.
He alleged that the defendant also stole Infinix Hot 12 i cell phone, valued N80,000, belonging to the complainant.
According to him, the offences contravened Sections 185 and 302 Criminal Laws of Ekiti State 2021.
He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Luke Mbam, urged the court to grant his client bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Saka Afunso, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N25,000 with one surety in like sum.
He adjourned the case till June 29 for hearing.
