Panic in Delta as State records 2 new cases of COVID-19, 5 health workers quarantined

The news of five National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, medical personnel serving at the Otu-Jeremi General Hospital, Ughelli South local government area of Delta State, been quarantined after they came in contact with a female COVID-19 patient in the hospital caused panic across the state.

 

The corps members; three doctors, a pharmacist and a medical laboratory scientist, where quarantined alongside a female nurse working in the hospital after coming in contact with a patient who is currently at the Isolation and treatment Center, Warri.

 

The patient, one of the new cases of COVID-19, Miss Omamuzo Ijala, is a 36 years old female who resides at Bendel Estate along Ugborikoko Airport road, Uvwie, had visited her boyfriend at Utuama in Udu LGA where she fell ill.

According to a hospital source, she and her boyfriend, “came to the hospital last Thursday and upon medical test, she was diagnosed of tuberculosis and showed symptoms of COVID-19 and was referred to Warri centre for treatment.

 

“Unfortunately, she went to the Warri centre on Sunday, three days after, were her sample was collected and taken to Irua Specialist hospital for test the next day which was Monday.

 

“The result came out the next day, Tuesday and she was diagnosed to be positive for COVID-19. The NCDC team has already begun contact tracing at the residence of her boyfriend in Utuama in Udu LGA and her own residence in Bendel estate in Effurun, Uvwie local government area.”

Meanwhile, Delta State Government has announced two new confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Mordi Ononye, in a statement on Wednesday in Asaba, said the new cases has brought the total confirmed cases in the state to six, with one death and five active cases.

According to him, the two new cases, one female and one male, were recorded at Uvwie and Udu Local Government Areas of the state.

The commissioner further disclosed that all the patients were doing very well and urged Deltans with symptoms of the COVID-19 like fever, malaria, catarrh, cough, chest pain, difficulty in breathing and loss of appetite to report to the nearest government hospital for medical evaluation and possible testing.

He that “all the patients of the active cases are in stable condition and are receiving treatment from our team of medical professionals at our isolation centres across the state.

“We have 11 persons quarantined in our holding centres, while 140 contacts are being monitored across the state.

“There is ongoing active case search in the local government areas and we urge persons with symptoms of Respiratory Tract Infection like fever, nasal catarrh, cough, chest pain, difficulty in breathing/ tightness in the chest or loss of appetite to report to any nearest government hospital for medical evaluation.”
