Old Students of Orogun Grammar school, in Ughelli North local government area of Delta State, have honoured an old student of the institution, Prof Ben Emukufia Oghojafor appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Dennis Osadebe University, Asaba by the state governor, Sen. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa.

Prof. Ben Emukufia Oghojafor, an old student of Orogun Grammar School, was appointed the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Dennis Osadebe University, Asaba in April 2021 by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Speaking during a grand reception in his honour, the President-General of Orogun Grammar School Old Students worldwide, Evang Godspower Odenema said, “Today we are celebrating one of the thorough breed academician and a product of Chief Demas Akpore, former Deputy Governor of the defunct Bendel State.

“Oghojafor is a disciplinarian, a seasoned technocrat and an Ambassador of Orogun grammar school, one of the old students of this school that has been appointed as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Dennis Osadebe University and we are glad and grateful to the state Governor.”

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ben Oghojafor who acknowledged God for his mercies that placed him where he is today and Chief Demas Akpore who made it possible for him to have secondary education.

“I want to acknowledge one of my teachers, Mr James Avwordu who is alive today at 102, to witness a student he taught as a Vice-Chancellor.

“If I am to write this speech, I would have titled it the ‘Audacity of Appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Dennis Osadebe University’, why audacity, the Governor, Sen. Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa has no reason to appoint me, for political reasons, my own cousin and younger brother, Chief Great Ogboru has contested election several times and the political pendulum shifted in Delta central, they went to court.

“But here you find me to be appointed by him as a Vice-Chancellor, and the books I used for Latin at Orogun Grammar school are still on the shelve at the University of Lagos and I still consult them from time to time.

“I am indeed proud to be an alumnus of Orogun Grammar school. I am grateful to be amongst the set that graduated from Orogun Grammar school in 1972 for the role they played in my life.

“Orogun Grammar school taught me to labour and discipline and in that motto, I have lived my life and when I met my mentor, my benefactor, Chief Demas Akpore in 1977, in Zaria, he prayed for me to excel, but when I gave my inaugural lecture, calling the name of those I have served in life and are no more, I wept.

“I wept because I would have been happier if Akpore is alive. My carrying blocks and planks in Orogun Grammar taught me how to build in life and that prepared me for an onward journey in life. Whatever I have achieved today is as a result of Orogun Grammar school.”
