Lifeless body of “commercial sex worker” causes panic in Sapele

A lifeless body of a 27-year-old “commercial sex worker” found on Wednesday morning in Oguanja area of Sapele, Sapele local government area of Delta State, has caused panic in the area over possible police arrest.

ADVOCATE gathered that Police in Sapele has commenced an investigation into the cause of the death of the yet to be identified young lady who had visited her boyfriend in the area by Tuesday night but was found dead in the morning with the alleged boyfriend going into hiding.

Different tales have followed the death of the lady, one account says that the young lady might have died as a result of marathon sex and that the boyfriend allegedly “brought her out to make it appear that she died outside, and ran out of the house.”

Another source in the area who claimed to know the lady but crave for anonymity said, the deceased is an Igbo woman and that she was a commercial sex worker in a popular brothel in town, “she always comes to meet her boyfriend in the area here, I think she came on Tuesday night, found out that he was not at home and she was lying outside waiting for him when she suddenly slumps and died.”

A woman who leaves in the area, who simply identifies herself as Iya Tosan said, “The lady has always exhibited signs of sickness, each time she comes to meet her lover in the neighbourhood, so I think her death should not be linked to anybody,” she said.

It was further gathered that the young man reported himself to the Police in Sapele and he is currently in detention, while investigation to the death of the girl is ongoing.

However, a police source who spoke to ADVOCATE but pleaded for anonymity said, the lady was found dead outside when the neighbours alerted the police authorities and that the body bore no injuries that suggest she must have been killed or attacked but, it’s too early to say somebody killed her or she died of natural causes.

Meanwhile, when ADVOCATE contacted the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onowakpoyeya, she confirmed the incident saying, “yes, it’s true, they said she was sick for two weeks, and that it was the boyfriend that came to report, and that they took her to a hospital where she was confirmed dead, there is no mark of violence seen on her.”

The corpse of the lady has been deposited at the Sapele Central hospital.

In the past one week, there have been increases in violent crime in Sapele, particularly armed robbery cases and cult-related attacks and with policemen refusal to go back to their duty post, criminals are having a filled day, robbing residents of the valuables unchallenged.
