Herdsmen Killings: Egbo urges DTHA to enact anti-open grazing law with provision for local security outfit

By Ovasa Ogaga,

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in Delta State, Olorogun Jaro Egbo has tasked the Delta State House of Assembly to revisit the anti-open grazing law with modification to include the setting up the state local security outfit in order to stem the incessant herders killing in the state.

Egbo, while reacting to the recent attack by Fulani Herdsmen at Uwheru Kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state, also called on the state government to reach out to other states government in south-south zone to set up a regional security outfit like Amotekon in the west.

The APC chief who contested and won the Ughelli North State Constituency 11 election in 2019 but lost out to internal party crisis commended the Uwheru king for placing a ban on the sales and consumptions of cow meat in the kingdom.

He also charged Urhobo political class, the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU and the Urhobo monarchs to go beyond the rhetoric of condemning the recent herdsmen killing in Uwheru by making concerted efforts to forestall future killings.

According to him, “the Urhobo political class, the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU has failed our people, one would have expected them to meet and take far reaching decision which will pressurize the state and federal government to act in order to stop this threat to our people in their ancestral land.

“What have our elected members both at the state and national Assembly done? We have top state government appointees from this local government what did they do? What brief did they give to the governor apart from mere rhetoric’s of condemnations?

“The leadership of UPU, political class, and the Urhobo monarchs should book appointment to meet with Mr President and the State Governor, not just condemning the attacks on the pages of newspaper to score cheap political point while our people      are massacred daily.

He noted that there is little or nothing Uwheru people can do to defend itself against the ravaging marauders herdsmen unless the Urhobo political class put their political interest aside and come together like the west to find a home grown solution to the herders’ imminent threats.

Egbo therefore, urged the Urhobo lawmakers in the State House of Assembly to reach out to their counter parts in Ndokwa, Aniocha, Isoko and Ika who are also impacted areas to ensure that the anti-open grazing bill which they jettisoned in the last legislative dispensation is retooled to meet the present reality and passed speedily.
