Gov Sule appeals to Nasarawa residents to accept old bank notes

By Sunday John
Gov  Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has appealed to the residents to continue to accept the old N500 and N1, 000 notes, following directives of  the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The governor made the call shortly after meeting with Managers of Commercial Banks on Tuesday in Lafia.
According to him, the meeting was prompted by the statement issued by the CBN, directing banks to accept and disburse the old N500 and N,000 notes, in compliance with the Supreme Court judgement.
He said his administration became worried following the loses suffered by farmers in the state, who could not transport their produce to the market owing to the prevailing scarcity of money.
He explained that it was too early to ascertain whether commercial banks have sufficient old notes to disburse.
“Our people should begin to accept the available old naira notes which are still legal tender till December this year.
“We just met with Managers of Commercial Banks and they assured that the instruction came from the central bank,” Gov. Sule added.
He said that accepting the old notes would go a long way in alleviating  the suffering of the people who mostly spend the night at bank premises.
