Confusion in APC as Giadom, Eta gives counter directives

By Ovasa Ogaga,

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress today took a new twist, as the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Victor Giadom and National Vice Chairman (South-South), Hilliard Eta counter directives threw members of the party into confusion.

Gaidom speaking at a media briefing at the party’s National Secretariat, where he also announced himself as the new Acting National Chairman of the party, on Wednesday, nullified the disqualification of Governor Godwin Obaseki from participating in the party’s governorship election in Edo State.

He said the reports of the APC’s screening and appeal committees were nullified because “Oshiomhole acted as a judge in his own case.”

He disclosed that his action was predicated on a meeting held with other members of the National Working Committee after Tuesday’s Appeal Court ruling affirming the suspension of the substantive National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

According to him, “Yesterday the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, in a unanimous judgement, affirmed the suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as National Chairman of All Progressives Congress.

“Consequently, I bring to your notice that on the 16th of March 2020, Hon Justice S.U Bature in suit no FCT/HC/M/6447/2020 had ordered that, with the earlier suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, I, Chief Hon. Victor Giadom should act as the National Chairman of our great party.

“That Order could not be immediately effected at the time because of the temporary reprieve Adams Oshiomhole got from the Court of Appeal on the same date.”

He further said, “As your Acting National Chairman and presiding officer in the NWC, we, therefore, cancel the decision of the Screening and Appeal Committees of the former Chairman of the party on the Edo primary.”

Giadom’s announcement is coming a few hours after the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, issued a statement announcing the Deputy National Chairman (South), Senator Abiola Ajimobi as Acting National Chairman.

However, in a swift reaction, some members of APC National Working Committee loyal the embattled National Chairman appointed National Vice Chairman (South-South), Hilliard Eta, as Acting National Chairman of the party, in absence of Senator Abiola Ajimobi, who was indisposed

The NWC also announced a seven-member primary election committee to conduct the June 22 Edo State APC Governorship primary with Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, as Chairman, while Senator Ajibola Basiru, was named Secretary.

Others are; Alh. Abdullahi Abass, Hon. Ibrahim Sabo, Hon. Ocho Obioma, Hajia Amina Lantana Muhammed, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye.

They also named members of the Primary Election Appeal Committee as, Prof. Mustapha Bello – Chairman and Dr Kayode Ajulo – Secretary, others are, Hon. Umar Ahmed, Nasiru Ibrahim Junju and Hon. Rasaq Mahmud Bamu.

National Vice Chairman (South-South), Hilliard Eta, announced this while briefing the media about decisions taken by the NWC shortly after the appointment of Senator Abiola Ajimobi as Acting National Chairman.

Ajimobi was named after an Appeal Court upheld the suspension of the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole, on Tuesday.

He said an earlier announcement by the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Victor Giadom, cancelling the disqualification of the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, was “strange”.

According to him, Giadom lacked the grounds on which to take such a decision because he ceased to be a member of the NWC since he resigned his position to contest an election as Deputy Governor of Rivers State.

Eta said, “As the person in charge of the South-South, we have no record that Giadom returned after the election.”

He further explained that the lot fell on him to address the media because the acting National Chairman, Abiola Ajimobi was unavailable.

Eta said, according to the APC constitution, when the party chairman from a particular zone is unavailable, the Deputy National Chairman from the zone acts.

“In the absence of the Deputy National Chairman, the National Vice Chairman from the Zone where the substantive Chairman hails from steps in.”
