2023:  ZLP rules out zoning of guber candidate in Delta

… Says we are looking for competence, industry

The Chairman, Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Delta,  Mr Emeka Nkwoala has said that the party would present a competent and a captain of industry as its governorship candidate come 2023 in Delta.

Nkwoala stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, in Asaba

He noted that the party had started early in the year with its state executive council meeting to strategise ahead of the governorship election to ensure that it fielded the right candidate

He said that the party was not considering zoning, having not won the governorship election in the state, adding that rotational governorship was exclusive for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta.

He said though the rotational governorship policy of the PDP had worked for them and ensured a level of peace in the state, ZLP would look for persons with integrity, competence and industry irrespective of the zone, tribe or language in the state

“On our preparation for 2023 governorship election, we have started on the right footing by convening our first State Executive Committee meeting in January held in Asaba to strategies because politics is about the people.

“So, you need to consider what the people’s aspirations are. The state and the national executives of our party are already working and putting structures across the country ahead of the elections.

“As a party, we shall have our primaries and a governorship candidate will emerge for our party in Delta.

“On the issue of rotational governorship along senatorial and ethnic divide in Delta, for me as the state chairman, the governorship position is a meritocracy, wherever the person is from, is not an issue as far as ZLP is concerned.

” We are looking for the best. The rotational governorship thing is for the PDP, since 1999, PDP has been governing the state.

“ZLP is not part of the rotational agreement, it is limited to PDP in Delta, however, it has brought about relative peace in the state.

“But for us in the ZLP, we are looking for the best man or woman that can deliver good governance to the people of the state,” Nkwoala said.

He added, “We must be certain of the candidate’s antecedent; what he or she has done for the community and the state.

“We are not looking for money bags; those who were nothing before 1999 but were privileged to have access to the state treasury.

“We are looking out for people who have provided industry, created employment for youths and women,  those who painstakingly run generators and make sacrifices for the people to put food on their table and had supported many households”.

Nkwoala said that the ZLP would X-ray and come up with the best governorship candidate for the 2023 election as the party’s contribution to ensuring good governance and sustainable development in Delta.
