Nigeria Dental Association, Edo State Chapter has harped on the need to maintain good oral health hygiene as it links to the overall health and well-being of the body in countless ways.
Speaking to Advocate Newspaper in Benin prior to World Oral Health Day, Chairman of the Association, Dr. Clement Chinedu Azodo reiterated the advantages of preventive care over curative care pointing out that a dental case that is not well managed can lead to death.
He disclosed that oral disease can complicate other diseases like Diabetes which is bi-directional explained that increased blood sugar worsens the status of a patient while oral disease has the tendency to led to Diabetes.
Dr. Azodo said the Association under his watch trained Dentists on suturing, launched a series of awareness campaigns and outreach programmes around the state to educate people on the need for them to take their oral health seriously as well as provide dental services to them
Dr. Azodo said that competition on oral health was organised for schools in Benin, while their visit to the Permanent Secretary of Edo State Health Management Board also translated to the employment of specialists.
While noting that the issue of trying to learn with patients is paramount in the medical profession, Dr. Azodo disclosed that simulators were procured by the association.
He called on government, Non-Governmental Organizations and corporate bodies to partner with the Association to promote good oral health among the people.
Dr. Azodo advised people to balance their diet and always demand a practising licence before patronizing dentists to avoid quacks.
