Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri yesterday led top government officials and lawmakers onboard first commercial flight operation by United Nigeria Airlines to the Bayelsa International Airport, Yenegoa.
The governor and his team alongside the Chairman, United Nigeria Airlines, Mr. Obiora Okonkwo, flew from Lagos to Yenegoa as the airline adds Bayelsa to its new destination from Lagos and Abuja.
Anxious Bayelsans had thronged the airport as early as 9 am, to see the plane, which did not land until 4 pm amidst wild jubilation by Bayelsans.
The delay was said to have been caused by bad weather.
Intermittent rains also did not help matters at the venue, as some guests, who were not in the open space, ran to their vehicles and other places they could find shelter.
The aircraft, which took off from the Murtala Mohammed Airport 2 (MMA2) in Lagos exactly at 3 pm, had on board Governor Diri, the airline’s Chairman, Chief Obiora Okonkwo, Tokyo Olympics Silver medalist in wrestling, Bayelsa-born Blessing Oborududu, King Alfred Diete-Spiff, Ambassador Boladei Igali, members of the Bayelsa National Assembly caucus as well as House of Assembly members and commissioners, among other dignitaries.
Addressing the crowd on arrival, Diri said a full commercial flight would commence in two weeks based on bookings made.
