Delta LG Polls: Tension in Ughelli as attempts to raze DESIEC office foiled

There is browning at the Ughelli office of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, DSIEC following reported attempts to raze down the office by suspected hoodlums on the eve of the local government election.

Advocate.ng gathered that some angry mobs allegedly stormed the DSIEC office at Ughelli, Ughelli North government,  Delta State in an attempt to set the building on fire, but the timely intervention of the policeman saved the day.

The incident which occurred at 08:20 pm yesterday night has caused chaos in the area as there were gunshots thereby causing panic.

Residents of the area who spoke Advocate.ng but pleaded for anonymity said: “The hoodlums wanted to raze down the DSIEC office, but for the timely intervention of security personnel on guard, peace was restored.

“The salvo lasted till about 01:45 am in the early hours of the morning.

It was gathered that on the eve of the local government elections, security agents drafted from the state command foiled and dispatched the hoodlums.

According to a security source, “actually there were some persons lurking around the DESIEC office last night and today but the security agents are on the ground to quell any attempt.

The source lamented that tension is currently high here because at 9.40 am election materials are yet to arrive at Ughelli DESIEC office.

However, it was gathered that material was allegedly distributed at the Ughelli Township stadium.

As of 9:30 am today, reports across the state show that voting has not commenced in most local governments.

Our reporters reported that voting material was distributed at about 8:30 am at Ukuwani LG area and voting is currently ongoing.

There was also a reported case of voter’s apathy and a late start in Sapele, Ughelli South, Udu, Oshimili North, and South.
