Delta community vows to use ‘spiritual/traditional’ mechanism to deal with electricity vandals

By Oghenekaro Gabriel
The Chairman of Light Committee in Afiesere community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr. Matete Avrukpere has said the committee would employ every means, including traditional and spiritual to detect the culprits of vandalization of electricity equipment in the community and deliver justice on them accordingly.

Mr. Avrukpere stated this yesterday while reacting to the vandalization of one of the transformers serving the community, maintaining that the committee would no longer leave anything to chance anymore.

He warned criminals who specialize in vandalizing electrical installation and equipment to desist from tampering with electric cables in the area or face dire consequences.

Vandalized transformer

The visibly angry chairman recounted that just this year, the transformer’s cables had been vandalized twice, saying in the first instance, the community spent close to N600,000 (Six hundred thousand naira) to restore light to the area only to be vandalized again two days ago.

He however attributed the problem to the incessant power outage in the area and appealed to officials of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to constantly supply light to the community, just as he advised parents to call their children to order and steer clear of the transformer.
