The Civil Liberties Organization (CLO), a non-governmental organization (NGO), has condemned attacks on the premises and security personnel of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and police stations in the southeastern states.

Recalls that INEC and police stations in the five southeastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo have come under severe attacks in recent times.

CLO President Anambra, Mr Vincent Ezekwueme, condemned the attacks while speaking with the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) on Wednesday in Enugu on the negative impact of development.

According to Ezekwueme, it is unfortunate and despicable that the area is slipping into lawlessness due to the callous and unreasonable actions of some disgruntled people.

He said violence, mutilation, murder and arson could not be a solution to any problem but would increase the challenges.

“The money that will be used to meet basic living needs will be used to replace damaged facilities,” he said.

The CLO boss called on the government to step up its game to secure and protect the lives and livelihoods of citizens in the area.

“There is an urgent need for collective and collaborative efforts by government and citizens to reinvigorate the security architecture for effective and efficient policing.

“It will certainly encourage investors and improve the economy, the infrastructure of the area and reduce unemployment,” he said.

He prayed for the eternal rest of the souls of the security personnel who were killed in the chaos.

Ezekwueme also prayed to God to give the families of the deceased the courage to endure the irreplaceable loss.

“We call on politicians, authorities and businesses to use empowerment, employment, education, skills training, inclusion and love of the masses to win the war on youth crime and unrest.

“With a gun, you can kill a terrorist, but with education, skills training, economic empowerment and social justice you can kill terrorism,” he said.

NAN reports that over the past two weeks there have been daily reports of attacks and fires against the CENI, police premises and personnel in the geopolitical area of the Southeast.
