Bale bizzardly gets number 50 shirt in Madrid’s return

Gareth Bale was bizarrely handed the number 50 shirt, as he enjoyed a mixed return to action for Real Madrid on Sunday night.

Making his return to action following the recent European Championship campaign with Wales, Bale started from the off for Real in their pre-season friendly with AC Milan, and produced a lively performance, winning a penalty just before the break for his team.

The Wales international, who seems destined to stay in the Spanish capital following another summer of speculation, then saw his evening turn to frustration after missing the resulting spot-kick, before being replaced by Vinicius Jnr. at half-time.

The sight of Bale with such an unusual squad number may well spark further questions over his future with the club, but it’s not yet clear exactly how much can be read into the movie.

Bale had previously worn number 11 for seven years, before Marco Asensio took the number, following the Welshman’s loan move to Tottenham last summer.

It’s perhaps worth bearing in mind that the number 50 was also worn when Eden Hazard made his Real debut in a pre-season friendly against Bayern back in 2019.
