A chairmanship candidate for Ughelli North Local Government Area in the forthcoming Delta State local government elections slated for March 6, 2021, Mr Richard Ovwreghreghekohwo has called on the Federal Government and the various State Governments in the Niger Delta region to look beyond oil explorations but tap the tourism potentialities in the region, as an alternative means of improving the economy of the region.

Ovwreghreghekohwo popularly known as Aduvie made the call over the weekend, during the inauguration of AMC Foods, a continental eatery project located within the popular Achievers Recreation Park, Enerhen Junction in the business district of Warri.

The chairmanship candidate who was represented by the President-General of Idjerhe Agbarha-Otor community, Comrade Matthias Ogbagah hinted that the Niger Delta region is predominantly blessed with natural resources and assorted tourism infrastructures capable of boosting the economy of the region and the country at large if well tapped and properly funded.

He added that this will go a long way in creating job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths in the region.

The local government chairmanship candidate specifically appealed to the various governments and spirited individuals in the Niger Delta region to do everything possible to revive the moribund Bomadi Beach, Port Harcourt Park, River Ethiope Beach, River Motel Abraka and such other tourist attractions, explaining that such a venture could be gainfully actualized through public-private partnership thus fast-tracking the processes for effective tourism development of the region.

Ovwreghreghekohwo, however, identified some factors inhibiting tourism development in the region notably security challenges, sea robbery, militancy, underdevelopment of the region as well as negligence on the part of both the Federal and State Governments and penchant for social stratification, among others, while calling on the authorities to formulate favourable policies to checkmate the status quo.

Earlier, he commended the facilitator of AMC Foods, Mr Oluwayemi Davidson, noting that the endeavour would boost food tourism of Warri and Delta State as a whole.

According to him, culinary tourism or food tourism has now been globally acknowledged as a vital component of the tourism industry since dining out is a necessity among tourists just as food is also believed to rank alongside climate, accommodation, and scenery in importance to tourists.
