A group, Delta Communities Political Forum (DCPF) has called on People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and oil merchant, Prince Okiemute Oviri Okwagbe to run for the House of Representative seat for Ughelli/Udu Federal constituency, come 2023.
DCPF made the call when it paid a courtesy visit to Prince Oviri at his country home in Okwagbe town, Ughelli South local government area of Delta State.
The National Chairman of DCPF, Comrade Simon Sam, who led other members of its executives to the visit said the call became necessary, having observed the notable contributions Prince Oviri have made towards the successes of the party both at ward, local government, senatorial and state levels.
He said, “You have worked for the party very hard but up till now no political office have been given to you, because if political office have been given to you, it would not be hidden. The only political office that have been given to you is just SA, even a board of parastatals should have been given to you.
“You have labored for the party very much, you have laboured for individuals, even today along Ughelli/Warri Road, and anyone that is passing will see your billboards for people. We want you to contest for the House of Reps to represent us in the green chambers in Abuja. We know it is not an easy task but you have laboured, now let people labour for you, let the party labour for you, let the party exco, let the state, let the local government, let the community labour for you.
“We as a group believe you have all it takes to give proper representation to our people and attract the dividends of democracy that has eluded our people due to poor representation.”
In his response, Prince Okiemute Oviri declined the call to run for the position, noting that he was not one that was poised to seek electoral positions
He said, “Right now I have no intention of contesting, we still have much time maybe I will change my mind but for now nothing. What we are praying for is for God to continue to keep us. As long as I still have good health, long life, I am happy.
“It is true what you said. It is God that put those words in your mouth and it is God that empowered you to be able to voice it out the way you did. But the truth is that, I believe more in working from behind. I have a friend who is contesting for that position and what we are focusing now is to win the delegates, when it is time for the general election, by God’s grace, I will work with you people.”
