Delta woman cries out for help over police’s assault on her, son in Warri

Accuse the police of pointing a gun at her 11 years old son

Delta woman, one Mrs Victory Rufus of Idama Road, Warri, Delta State has accused police officers in B Division, Eboh Road, Warri of allegedly assaulting her physically and sexually in the guise of enforcing a curfew.

Mrs Rufus while narrating her ordeal, disclosed that her resident was invaded by some policemen accompanied by vigilante on Sunday night while she and her 11 years old Son (name withheld), were indoors watching a home video and suddenly their generator set went off.

She said she was shocked when she came out to discover the reason behind the blackout, were policemen and local vigilantes who put the generator off and were going away with it.

She added that when she attempted to find out why her generator set was put off and been taking away, one of the policemen started flogging her for asking them questions.

It was in the heat of the incidence that she urged her son to call on her husband, an action which prompted some of the vigilantes to push her and the son into their apartment.

Mrs Rufus said it was at that point that a policeman pointed a gun at her son who left him physically shaken; meanwhile, the assault was still on.

According to her, the towel she was wrapped in fell off her waist and she was left with her panties while the policemen were still on their action.

She also disclosed that she saw some of the policemen and crew putting off the generator sets of her neighbours and other residents of the street.

As at the time of filing this report, the 11 years old boy, was still exhibiting tendencies of psychological trauma.

A lawyer and brother to the victim, Orezimena Ibu described the incidence as reeking of abuse of power and indifference to the integrity of human right.

He said they would stop at nothing until the assailants were apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law.

When contacted on Monday, Delta State Command, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said she was busy and will call back, all other attempts to reach her failed, and at press time, she didn’t call back.
