COVID-19 Threat: Delta ALGON ban use of pry schools for events

ALGON took the step at its monthly meeting on Thursday, 19th March, held in Asaba, which was attended by 19 Local Government Chairmen.

According to a press statement signed by its state ALGON chairman, Itiako Ikpokpo, Ksm they directed Education Secretaries of Local Education Authorities, LEAs, across the State to stop forthwith approval for the use of Public Primary School fields for all kinds of social gatherings and ceremonies.

The statement also said that the meeting also received the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mordi Ononye who briefed ALGON on the steps and measures put in place by the State Government, including the various teams set up to work with the Local Governments teams and referral centers established across the State.

It stated further that after the briefing, ALGON expressed satisfaction on the level of preparedness of the Delta State Government in curtailing the spread of the disease. The meeting resolved as follows;

“Local Governments on the borders particularly on the sea which include Ethiope West, Bomadi, Burutu, Patani, Warri South West and Warri South to work closely with the Port Health team and the Security agencies in ensuring proper screening of persons in and out of those areas.

“Immediate commencement of wide spread sensitisation, in communities across the State on social distancing, personal hygiene, regular hand washing and avoidance of crowded environments. The meeting urged people particularly in markets, motor parks, churches and all other crowded places to adhere strictly to these new protocols of consistent hand washing and social distancing.

“The meeting directed Education Secretaries of Local Education Authorities, LEAs, across the State to stop forthwith approval for the use of Public Primary School fields for all kinds of social gatherings and ceremonies.”

ALGON also observed that the COVID-19 pandemic is global and is currently without a proven cure. The meeting therefore warned our people to desist from excessive and harmful intake of alcohol, and other unorthodox medications as preventive or curative measures against the virus.
