BREAKING: Policeman shot dead as ENDSARS protest turns bloody in Delta

A Police Corporal simply identified as Stanly, attached to Ughelli Police Area Command, Ughelli Delta State, was today shot dead by suspected hoodlums which hijacked ENDSARS protest which began peacefully in town.


Advocate gathered that the policeman was allegedly shot by one of the protesters at Otuvwodo area of the town and that his men have to fire warning shots before taking his lifeless body to the police station.


Recall that hundreds of youths took to the major streets of Ughelli in a solidarity protest with other protesters around the country calling for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS of the Nigeria Police.


The protesters most of whom are males in their early 20s and 30s had grounded vehicular movement along major streets amidst a long entourage of exotic cars accompanying them.


The protest started from the Otovwodo junction area of Ughelli, through Isoko road to market road to Ekuigbo and back to Otovwodo junction.


The incident also cause major traffic jam and the destruction of several cars as commuters along the East-West road axis of Otovwodo junction scampered for safety following the series of gunshots that ensued while the melee lasted.
Protesting in a convoy of tens of exotic cars in company of some female protesters, one of the leaders of the protesters who identified himself as Ochuko, said they had decided to boycott the police station in a bid to forstall a clash with policemen at the station.
It was gathered that some of the protesters whom were apparently agitated, had met a team of policemen at Otovwodo junction were the protest walk was suppose to end and a clash ensued leading to a sporadic gunfire while the police returning same.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, one of their leaders who simply gave his name as Ochuko said they are protesting in solidarity with other protesters and victims of SARS brutality on the need to end SARS in the Nigeria Police.


He said: “Until now, Ughelli has been a heaven for SARS operatives who have been harassing and molesting us.


“We were supposed to protest to the Ughelli Police Area Command, but we decided to change our plans because we would not want to have a confrontation with the police, hence we have decided to just demonstrate along the major roads of Ughelli.”



As at the time of filing this report, efforts to get the Delta State PPRO to confirm the report was unsuccessful.
