The four Catholic priests kidnapped by gunmen on Tuesday, November 6, at about 3:30pm by Urhonigbe near Abraka on their way to the All Saints Major Seminary Uhiele have regained freedom.
The four priests Rev. Frs. Victor Adigboluja of Ijebu Ode Diocese; Anthony Otegbola, Abeokuta Diocese; Joseph Ediae, Benin Archdiocese; and Emmanuel Obadjere of Warri Diocese were both abducted on their way to their Alma Mater for an alumni meeting when gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen attacked their
convoy and forcefully took them away .
Rev. Fr. Mike Oyanoafoh, Chancellor of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin confirmed their release on Friday evening. He priests had been taken to Benin-City, the Edo State capital for treatment.
The priests according to the chancellor were rescued by a joint police team from Delta and Edo States as the abductors fled when they noticed that the rescue team was closing in on them.
It was however gathered that about N10 Million ransom was paid before the release of the priests as several suspects in connection with abduction have been arrested by the police command from the two states.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr Muhammad Mustafa, who confirmed the development, said the abducted priests were rescued by police operatives late Friday evening. Mustafa also confirmed the arrest of some suspects .
